How to create a chic, affordable, functional command center!
Here’s one way to really get some chic done! I have been wanting to do this for so long but I was having trouble finding the space and an idea of exactly what I wanted. Once I hopped on Pinterest, the ideas started flowing!
I knew I wanted it in my kitchen because it seemed the most logical with the set up of my house. I decided on the side of my pantry for a few reasons: it isn’t a focal point of the kitchen, it is otherwise unused space, and the alternative was on a main wall.
This is the blank canvas I had to work with. *Peep the basket of dog towels on the ground- not ideal*
After creating my Pinterest board, I decided on a few things I knew I needed:
- Mail holder – my husband is a mail hoarder! “I want to read this later” is said often while the mail lays on my island for 2 weeks.
- Calendar – although I use a planner, this is more for my husband and a quick glimpse of our month
- Menu board – I am terrible at meal planning and trying to be better, I thought this may help.
- Invitation board – Our refrigerator is somewhat “built in” so there is no place to hang invites
- Pen holder- to hold dry erase markers and pens
Other than that, I was open to anything that was a practical “filler” and looked aesthetically pleasing.
My goal was to keep this as affordable and functional as possible.
Where to start
Start with what you have! Like I said I knew the items I wanted to include so I started with what I already had laying around my house.
Mail Holder
I had the file holder that was empty in my office so I chose that for the mail. I scooped this up at Marshall’s years ago. This is similar and you may want to use multiple ones for multiple family members if you find you have a lot incoming mail lying around. Depending on how much depth you have, this would be a great option as well.
Calendar
I am super lucky that one of my best friends is a co-founder of Bloom Daily Planners. I get surprise Bloom goodies often and I love their wall calendar! This is the one I use! Not only is it under $15, but so feminine and cute! It brings a nice pop of color to my command center! You can also spot a Bloom clipboard in my mail bin that I leave a “chore chart” on.
Letter Board
Are you even a mom if you don’t have a letter board? Well since I have like 5 of these, I thought this one was the perfect size and color to add a little something to personalize this space. I bought this for Aria’s birth announcement but use it all the time! It is $23.95 but I love how unique it is!
Purchase the rest
Like I mentioned, I tried to find things I had before buying everything new – you will clearly have different items. Here is what was left to purchase:
Invitation Holder
I was perusing the Target dollar section when I spotted my pin board. It was only $5 so I highly suggest checking there first! Since I cannot find it on-line anywhere, this is the closest thing I could find but it is much larger and more expensive. There are also so many different styles of pin board you can use that can change the look and cost. A simple cork board or a magnet board or one with ribbon straps! Whatever works best for you!
Menu Board
I am so excited that I made this printable for my menu board! It’s available at the link below for free for ya’ll!
I got a white 8 ” x 10″ frame from Christmas Tree Shop for under $5.00. The beauty of it is that dry erase markers work on glass so any frame works!
WiFi Password
This was one of those “extra” things I found that if I had space I wanted to add. I created this one and also have a FREE printable link below! I used a basic white 5″ x 7″ frame for this printable.
Pen Holder
I wanted something simple and small to hold a dry erase marker, few pens, and pins for my invitation board. This was perfect and under $5!
Assembly
Because we decided to use the side of our pantry, I used 3M command strips and hooks for everything! I didn’t feel comfortable nailing into the side of it as it was super thin and likely wouldn’t hold.
I measured everything and laid it out on the floor to emulate what it would look like hanging.
Final Touches
Once I got everything in the layout I wanted. I stuck everything to the wall, filled out my calendar, and added a cute quote to my letter board! {Clearly this was around Valentine’s Day <3}
Hope you enjoy my free printables and tips to an affordable, chic command center!
